Snapdragon 855

Qualcomm introduces its new mobile processor Snapdragon 855 with 3 times more AI power purely optimized for 5G smartphones. The company just announced at its Snapdragon Technology Summit in Hawaii.

With more than 1 billion smartphones supplied, Qualcomm says that the past 11 years of Snapdragon processors are only the beginning of bringing users all the connected experiences they want, first. And while there was a moment where some thought that streak would end, the chipmaker is back for another crack at it, this time with 5G as its charge.

The announcement was expected: Qualcomm launched its predecessor, the Snapdragon 845, at the same conference almost exactly one year ago. But the new 855 isn’t just another spec bump. It’s the chip that will almost certainly appear in the first wave of 5G phones. Qualcomm has said this new platform will support “multi-gigabit” download speeds on 5G networks.

Naturally, this will equate to better performance and/or battery life, depending on how manufacturers choose to incorporate the chip. Qualcomm, for its part, says the chip will provide “up to three times” the AI chops of its predecessor.

Practically speaking, that means better performance for things like image processing and natural language recognition. In fact, the company has even included a separate computer vision processor in the chip, which should help improve images further. Google, for instance, has its Intel-made Visual Core chip to help speed up image processing on the Pixel 2 and 3.

Qualcomm also officially revealed the name and features for the upcoming Snapdragon 855 mobile platform. Today, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took the stage to talk about their relationship with Qualcomm. He also announced that they will have the first flagship smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 855.

Lau talked about how OnePlus started with the Snapdragon 801 in the OnePlus One and they have used Qualcomm 800-series chips in every device. The unnamed OnePlus 2019 flagship will be the first to feature the Snapdragon 855.

“We know that the 855 is the most powerful chipset, it is definitely the one and only choice [for our phone].”, Lau said
