There has been lots of buzz that Google recently removed 22 Apps from Play Store as those apps were used for ad fraud by hackers. Many Users complained of battery drainage and causing data overages as the apps were constantly running and communicating with servers in the background. Furthermore, the devices were fully controlled by the C2 server and can potentially install any malicious modules upon the instructions of the server. The apps in question had a cumulative total of two million downloads, raising serious concerns on data security. The apps were being used to virtually ‘click’ on online ads and generate revenues for the attackers.

Here are the list of Malicious Apps that Google removed from Play Store:

  • Sparkle Flash Light
  • Snake Attack
  • Math Solver
  • Take A Trip
  • Magnifeye
  • Join Up
  • Zombie Killer
  • Space Rocket
  • Neon Pong
  • Just Flashlight
  • Table Soccer
  • Cliff Diver
  • Box Stack
  • Jelly Slice
  • AK Blackjack
  • Color Tiles
  • Animal Match
  • Roulette Mania
  • HexaFall
  • HexaBlocks
  • ShapeSorter
  • PairZap

The Sophos blog said, “Andr/Clickr-ad is a well-organized, persistent malware that has the potential to cause serious harm to end users, as well as the entire Android ecosystem.”

Last week in a statement, Google said it takes “deceptive and malicious behaviour” on the platform very seriously. The statement was released after Google removed CM File Manager and Kika Keyboard apps from Cheetah Mobile and Play Store for deceptive behaviour.

Users who still have these apps installed on their devices won’t be free of them until they remove them permanently from their devices. De-listing from the Google Play Store ensures that the spread of the malware is contained for now, and advertisers will, on their end, prevent more fraudulent bounty requests.
