Cheramie Cheung, Product Manager, Facebook Messenger revealed Messenger’s New Camera Updates which could help spread holiday cheer. In her latest blog post on messenger news she mentioned of including Boomerang, AR Stickers and Portrait Mode.
The holiday season is one of the most popular times of year for people to use Facebook Messenger to connect with friends and family. In fact, Christmas and New Years are the biggest days of the year for overall messages sent on Facebook Messenger!
Because more than 20 million people use camera effects for photo and video posts on Messenger every day, today, we’re excited to share even more ways to make your seasonal messages fun, including two new modes in Messenger’s camera – Boomerang and Selfie, along with new AR stickers and holiday effects.
Starting today, there are now five modes to Facebook Messenger’s camera including everyone’s favorite video-looping effect, Boomerang, to make Messenger posts more interactive and fun. We’ve also added Selfie mode, where you can capture portraits of yourself or friends in Facebook Messenger’s camera. Now when you take a photo or video of yourself, you’ll remain in focus with a little extra glow while the background blurs.
We’re also making it easier to navigate Facebook Messenger’s existing camera modes — Normal, Video and Text. In Text mode, you can now add even more personality with new fonts and color backgrounds.
With over 440 million stickers sent in Facebook Messenger chats every day, we want to make sure people continue to have plenty of ways to express themselves, especially during the holiday season. Starting today, you will also find new stickers, powered by AR, which can be dragged with a touch on the screen and be placed on top of your real world videos or photos. If you take photos or videos with your device’s camera, you can also upload the image to Messenger and apply camera filters and effects to your conversations and stories.
Finally, be sure to check out the new holiday-themed features, including stickers, masks and filters, for some extra sparkle this season!

The update of Facebook Messenger is heavily inspired by Instagram, to the point that the new Selfie mode that automatically blurs backgrounds is practically identical to Instagram’s Portrait mode. All the three newly added camera modes will be available directly within the Facebook Messenger app. These will be placed alongside the existing Normal, Text, and Video modes. The team has added more font styles and color backgrounds to the Text mode. These changes are available for both Android and iOS devices with the latest version listed on the respective stores.
